My dawgs are barkin'

Shins are fucked up good
frustrating me to no end.
When can I next run?

Wheee, self-pity haiku! My right shin went from "I can notice that just a little bit after a hard run" to "ouch, it hurts to walk". Time to back off, in a big way. I didn't notice it at all until I took a long rest over Christmas, and a fairly easy first week back. I've obviously been pushing myself, but thought I was resting enough, and thought Christmas break was going to be enough to repair. Clearly I was wrong. It will be interesting to watch what happens with more rest, and more yoga.

  1. I've had shin splints for years; of course nothing on the same level as what you are suffering from I'm sure. You're running miles and miles for days and days. Mine flare up when some cute great nephew or neice coaxes me into running them around for five minutes making helicopter sounds. One of my smart nephews (Dr. Philip) who's a sports medicine guru told me to freeze water in little paper cups BEFORE any exercise (I keep them in the freezer now all the time). As soon as any exercise is complete, place the frozen ice shapes along the splints , next to the bone on each leg. Its the only relief I've ever known. He says splints are a misnomer, and it has to do with swollen tissue, thus the ice applied immediatly prevents the swelling before it becomes so painful. The other thing I've found that works great for me is to forget about running and lay around eating Fritoes instead.
