I decided to head in a direction that I normally don't, and did a lovely tour of Bushwick, including some of the cemeteries at the head of the string of them leading into Forest Park. I've spent some time out there on my bicycle, but it was a fantastic place to run.
Here's the map: http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/us/ny/brooklyn/497125752890337531
I didn't put my cemetery dwadling on the map, but there are great extravagant mausoleums out there, and giant old trees. Those cemeteries (Evergreens and Cypress Hill) are some of the quietest parts of the city I've found, and they are big and open enough that it's easy to completely avoid any processions. They sit on top of a hill, partly in Queens, partly in Brooklyn, providing great panoramic views of the boroughs.
On the way home I got to run one of my favorite stretches of street in New York; Bushwick Avenue between Eastern Parkway and Myrtle Avenue. The sidewalks are wide, with trees on the street side, wonderful for running. The architecture blows my mind. One passes old Dutch wood frame churches, stand alone mansions, beautiful brownstones and well kept apartment buildings.
The downside is that ultimately one has to cross Myrtle, and has to run Bushwick between Myrtle and Grand, which blows goat dick.
At least the goats are happy, and so am I.
